The Deep Blue Butterfly
A contemplation on fate

Will I harness the chariots in the sky? Will I run the first marathon between the stars? Or will I drown in the clouds between them? Will I wield the wind to defeat a great evil? Draw the sword of love and die a martyr? Or will I be nothing but the thousandth person to have tried? Will I mimic the deep blue butterfly? Fluttering in unparalleled beauty? Or will my wings be clipped, unable to dance? Will my mother and father bestow upon me the destiny of a legend? Will I be written and known through all the cosmos? Or will I inherit the life of a forgotten one, an ordinary, a fool? Will I die insignificant, in sadness, confused? What is fate? And what is mine?

Your poem asks a question many of us have asked, especially early in life. And you ask it beautifully. I would entreat you to consider that there are many levels BETWEEN harnessing the chariots and dying confused and forgotten. Most of my high school friends have had rather ordinary lives but appear to be content with their relationships, a decent home, food on the table, a nice trip to somewhere interesting now and then.
I am just learning this at 70, but even an ordinary life can be joyful. You don't have to worry about being ordinary because you are already extraordinary, and it's in your DNA and your intellect. You have time to reach for the stars, fall short, and reach a different way, and keep reaching.
I love Taira's addition because she has an underpinning of hope, belief, and intention. She will dance among the galaxies whether the world calls her a winner or not. She will be the judge, and that is wiser than I have been for most of my life.
Beautiful contemplation, Ryan.
